Why does using an image with transparent background as forum avatars end up having white background instead?

I don't know why does it exactly happens but, heard that it was because of the file's extension like ( .png, .jpg and that type of thing.)
I would suggest you google it though. At least, you will find the answer quicker than here.

Okay, that happens because the picture size. You must use a .PNG or .GIF picture which fit in your avatar space. (If you are able to use maximum 150x150 (for example) you can't use a picture bigger than that or it will appear with white background).

If the .png picture is bigger than the recommended size a white background will appear.

as Justin said,
and there are another way to use it.
1- download the image from google.
2- go to Settings
3- go to Edit avatar
4- Choose option 2, and click "Browse" and choose the picutre, Note: it must be 280 by 380 Pixels.

Another way.
1- upload the image to imgur.
2- copy the Direct link.
3- Paste it in option 1, Note: it must be 280 by 300 Pixels
4- Click Next
