Is it possible for moderators to give me permission to edit a thread that someone else started?

Unless you're a moderator yourself there isn't any other way. Not sure though but I think it goes like that.

^^ If you want to be a moderator of some section / thread you need to be loyal to the server and you need to be noticed. For example, to be a moderator of graphics discussion you need to make good signatures in photoshop. Later you can go ask 99999 admins for a permission.
