What is a .bak file?

So I'm moding some weapons in my game and I downloaded a rar.
In the rar I found .dff and .txd file as normal, but what is a .bak file?
I tough it would be for the sound?

When something is gonna overwrite a file that already exists, like when you save a document that you are working on, and it asks you if you want to overwrite it. The program will then make copy of the file that already exists, this when it makes it to a .bak file. This makes it possible to get the original stuff back from the file.
